Norwich Playhouse celebrates funny women for International Women’s Day
Norwich Playhouse is to stage a special one-night event to mark International Women’s Day and to highlight the contribution female stand-ups have made to the world of comedy.
Caroline Richardson, who has been general manager at the theatre for more than 14 years now, said Norfolk had seen performances from some great female comedians in the past and continued to attract funny women of the moment.
“We have had the likes of Jenny Éclair, Dillie Keane and Rhona Cameron perform at the Playhouse during my time – and they have all been strong, wonderful women,” she said.
Caroline herself decided it would be fun to mark International Women’s Day with all-female comedy night Lady Ha Ha.
The event will star Ava Vidal, who appeared on Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow on BBC1, Holly Walsh, from Channel 4′s the TNT Show and 8 out of 10 Cats, and Hackney Empire New Act of The Year finalist Vikki Stone. Compere for the night will be Susan Calman, from BBC2′s Rab C Nesbitt Show.
“It is going to be a good evening. We have got some very entertaining comedians coming to perform,” said Susan.
“It is nice to be able to celebrate International Women’s Day like this. There are some fantastic female comedians out there today.”
Jo Brand, who has also performed in Norfolk in the past, has famously said she went into comedy because some people think women are not funny – and she wanted to prove them wrong.
But even today there are far fewer women coming up through the ranks, prepared to step up to the mic.
Would-be female comedians are urged to try open mic nights at places such at The Workshop and The Birdcage in Norwich.
“To say women are not as funny as men just isn’t true. Who says that anyway? Probably the men!”
Lady Ha Ha takes place at the Norwich Playhouse at 8pm on Monday March 8.
Monday 8 March 8.00pm
